The new book is here! “Jessie Explores the World of Insects”

This is one of the books I had the most fun illustrating. Not only does it take children on an adventure to explore the fascinating world of insects, it also took me back to my own childhood, those days filled with memories of running through grassy fields, climbing trees, and searching for bugs of all kinds.

☆ Catching dragonflies back then was a real challenge. It required stillness and patience. I’d quietly sneak up from behind, barely breathing, and quickly pinch its tail with two fingers. After admiring it for a while, I’d gently let it fly back into the sky.

☆ October school breaks were all about rhinoceros beetles! They could often be found clinging to trees by the river near my village. I’d feed them sweet sugarcane, and in the evening, take them to beetle fights with my friends. My hands would be full of tiny scratches from their legs, yet I’d feel oddly proud.

☆ Another insect I made sure to include in this book is the red-nosed lanternfly, my favorite when I was young (we used to call it maeng kai din, “ground chicken bug”). They’d cling to longan trees, and I’d climb up to catch them. On good days with perfect weather, I could find four or five at once. Every time I caught one, I felt thrilled and always released it back afterward. These days, it’s become an insect you rarely see anymore.

☆ There are also crickets that jump far and high, and colorful butterflies fluttering among the bushes, all these little creatures are part of the joyful memories of growing up surrounded by nature.

I shared these stories with my son, and he said, “Daddy, I really want to see real beetle fights!”
I truly hope he’ll get the chance someday to experience that simple, beautiful joy that comes from nature itself.

I also hope that every child who reads this book will be inspired to observe the small wonders around them and discover the amazing world of insects with their own eyes.
